Our February Oakland City Community Organization’s general body meeting is this Tuesday 2/27 at Reverend James Orange Park 6:30. We will be joined by the Atlanta Land trust to discuss the upcoming Tucker Ave project. Representatives from the New Murphy Ave senior home will be there to share information. Also we have a new Captain in Zone 4 Capt. Brian Schiffbauer who will be there to meet with us as well.

Newly Elected Members of the Oakland City Community Organization

Congratulations are in order for the newly elected members of the Oakland City Community Organization. The new leaders are: Kyle Lamont- President, Judy Walker- Vice President, and Catherine Slocum- Secretary. The returning leaders are Kimberly Carter- Treasurer, and Katavia Sloan- Parliamentarian.

The Oakland City Raiders Spaghetti Dinner at Rev James Orange Park

Kudos go out to the city of Atlanta Parks and Rec staff- Ms. Bashir and Mr. Jones for hosting last week’s spaghetti dinner for the youth soccer team – the Oakland City Raiders. Coach Touissant spoke with parents about the upcoming season and the off-the-field-events that we have planned for the Oakland City Raiders. Please let other parents know about the opportunities for youth to learn and play soccer in the neighborhood. The coach can be reached at 404-680-0813.

Look Out For Design Engagement Meetings for 1091 Tucker Avenue

The Atlanta Land Trust is looking for your input/ideas for developing the property located at 1091 Tucker Avenue, which sits behind the Flea Market on Lee Street in Oakland City.  This housing development is part of the Transformation Alliance’s SPARCC project along Lee Street. It will be designed and implemented as a pilot project within the Equitable Development framework.  Robust community engagement, including a participatory design process with Oakland City residents and stakeholders, will be a signature part of the implementation.  Please look out for announcements of meeting dates and help the designers bring something unique, special, innovative, and trendsetting to Oakland City.

More Kids Wanted for the Oakland City Raiders Soccer Team- Spring Season Starts Next Week

A HUGE thank you goes out to the parents, young athletes, coaches and staff of Soccer in the Streets for the success of the Oakland City Soccer Program at the Reverend James Orange Park last Fall.  Overall, the Fall season was a success but it still has room for growth. The goal is to increase the amount of kids in the program by connecting more with kids who are not part of the after-school program, and include Oakland City in all of the Spring season games. The  Westside Conference Spring Season starts on March 10th and ends on May 27th. The last game of the season will be their Annual Parent vs Kids Game.

The Oakland City program practices on Monday and Wednesdays from 4-5:15pm at  the James Orange Park. All practices are co-ed and the age groups are 5-12 years old. Kemar Brown and Rajay Banton are the Oakland City coaches. Earn $80 for Participating in Study on Flooding in Oakland City/NPU-S

Project team leaders from WonderRoot, Southface and the West Atlanta Watershed Alliance (WAWA) request community partnership with residents of City Council Districts 4, 11 and 12, and Neighborhood Planning Units (NPUs) T, S and R on a survey of flooding in associated neighborhoods. Other areas and neighborhoods are invited to participate as well, but priority will be given to the listed Districts and NPUs.
Participants will receive free education and training on the local Utoy Creek Watershed, environmental impacts from flooding and stormwater resulting from heavy rain events, green technologies to better manage water and flooding at home and in the community, and how to complete the survey. The survey will assess the conditions of homes, streets/sidewalks, parks, etc. and their ability to manage water and prevent flooding. This will better inform our collective ability to identify areas for installing wayfinding, public art, community spaces and sustainable water management.

Our goal is to create more opportunities for community ownership, empowerment and capacity within the watershed and its neighborhoods for more sustainable and effective water management. Participants are requested to attend both days of training and site surveying.

Stipends: $80 for participation in both survey sessions
